Default Question if Java can "launch applications"

    Dear folks,

I have been modding minecraft and learning Java along the way. I am getting depressed because I don't want to be a java programmer as a full time job, but the language is easy to read and I enjoy coding for myself.

Is java able to execute a .bat file on a windows machine and kill the application the bat file launches after a certain amount of time? I have a web application that im craving to design to run on my windows servers. Or if not windows, can this be done on Linux environment?

My main focus of learning java is android games, but am I really dumping my life away to learn this language? Does anybody have any words of wisdom on an inspired newbie like myself? Is java beneficial just to make android games?

Just feel like all my time learning that it would only be good if I was an actually on the clock java programmer...

    Thanks for the help :)

See Runtime.exec() method, and ProcessBuilder class. Of course realize, you lock yourself into a platform specific environment and abolish the 'write once run anywhere' concept of Java.

Learning to program is quite similar to learning a second language. Many languages and dialects use similar concepts - from letters and words to nouns and verbs to phrases and paragraphs - and programming is quite similar in the sense that once you understand the foundations, a good programmer is not limited to one language.
