Default How can I use Java to connect two or more people to instantly in an internet browser?

I want to make a webpage that users will be able to log into a Java applet and send messages back and forth or move characters with keyboard and the results will show on other users that are logged into the Java applet instantly without having to use serious amounts of bandwidth to connect to server to check for data... Is there a way to just use the Java applet to send data directly to the other clients logged into the Java applet? You know like Runescape you can see other player's movements instantly and you know the program is not checking for server updates to get the position of other characters every couple of miliseconds because that would be way too much bandwidth. Anybody know a short code or the basics of this or a tutorial or other topic/post I could read to find out how to do this? I am a very experienced programmer, I don't know how to write Java code but I do understand the basics of it like getting the program compiler and writing the line include #stadfx or whatever. I understand the basic idea behind Java, the overall sytax and programming style that it uses. I have read through Java code before I should be able to take care of this myself if you could just point me in the right direction... Thanks for any help. :)

Applets are client side, so any communication between two different instances of an applet will require some sort of networking IO...whether through a central server or direction communication. One resource I'd recommend reading for direction (or server) communication is Lesson: All About Sockets (The Java™ Tutorials > Custom Networking)
