you need to run the codings using an applet.
for eclipse,
run-->run configurations--> java-applets(on the left side pane of the dialog box)-->click new button--> click run
(by default, it will be in application running mode)

The OP isn't using Eclipse; s/he's using Netbeans so your reply was completely off topic. Please read the thread before you attempt to reply.

An Applet or JApplet doesn't need a main( ... ) method but you can't run it if it were an application. An application does need such a method. (J)Applets run in your browser or in an applet viewer.

Thanks! So after all that, my code worked perfectly fine, I just wasn't running it in the right environment.
