    Default Bettering programming skills

    Hi everyone,

I'm very interested in furthering my skills in OOP. I know the basics pretty well, but I'm looking for any books similar to Design Patterns by Grady Booch, although that book was originally written in 1977 and am looking for something slightly more recent. It doesn't have to be specific to Java, and I'm looking for a book to tackle general problems in programming.

    Thoughts?

Just an FYI, design patterns have not changed much since the 70's. Like math, some patterns have and always will be there! The concepts in design patterns aren't language specific, but recently there has been a focus on patterns like MVC. But, here is a GREAT website involving design patterns, anti patterns, refactoring, etc... Great read! Design Patterns and Refactoring

The best way to learn is by doing. You can become an expert on the theories behind design patterns, but unless you're doing the work and writing real code, that knowledge won't get you very far. Create a project around something you enjoy outside of programming.

I love the For dummies series such as java for dummies and also think like a computer scientist. Its written in an easy to understand language: Think Java

    Thanks for the recommendations everyone!

I agree with you, Kevin. The best way to learn good programming is definitely by doing. I was trying to augment my learning through some supplementary reading.

Jammas, thanks for the find, but that was the exact book I was referring to, haha!

I'll look into the website you sent, Quad, it looks promising.

Yes, but didn't you scroll down the page and see the other books that were listed! :)

Reading isn't a bad idea, but it's ten times better when you put what you read into practice once you've read it as your're more likely to commit it to memory.

You should come up with a goal for example a project you always wanted to do. I find that it gives incentive to read even when the reading gets dry.

Thanks Mozly. I actually got a job as a junior Java developer, so I think that's pretty good incentive!
