Default Best way to manage images?

What is the best way to handle and store images? For example, I have a bunch of Images in an array and the array is sometimes called to get an Image from it. Should the array be in the class where the application draws? Or would it be better to keep it in some ImageManager class? Or does it even matter at all in terms of performance?

Im just asking this for the sake of good programmer organization tips...

Just my .02, while I don't know much about your application a database sounds overkill, and even then storing images within a database has potential issues associated with it that would make me dissuade you from doing so.

Are you having performance issues? If not I wouldn't worry about it whatsoever. Are you having organization issues? If yes, then think about encapsulating the images somehow. That could be through some type of manager class which restricts access to the images in the effort to encapsulate the retrieval of said images (be it if there are in the jar, on the file system, on the internet, etc...). If you want more specific advice, it might help to post a specific example.
