Default Netbeans and eclipse bug, also best gui developer?

    Hey guys,

So i'm a novice programmer and i am having trouble getting a java developent environment to run the way i want in linux. I dont like how eclipse has appeared to be so far because in order to write code in a non text (blalck and white) way you have to double click the .java file which opens up in a separate window. I dont want to have a plain basic text editor, i want the color coded words and have it run in the work space, not a separate window. Also in eclipse, when i run a program it says its missing the main class file. Also, when i use netbeans and run a program inside of it, it does not work. It just opens and empty program( the form with nothing in it, just a blank square). the way i am running my projects is opening a folder with the .class file and .java file in it as a java application. I have also tried it as a java app from existing source code. I have updated netbeans but still have the same problem.

Also, i was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for the best java development setup, definitely to be included with a gui editor so i dont have to code every element of the gui. i know they dont usually come with the environment so could you recommend a plug in or something? Thanks!

    Nick

EDIT: an error i get when trying to run a program in eclipse is that permission is denied to the .java file. I have granted access to it and all the folders used to get to it, it still doesnt work!!

None of that sounds like an eclipse problem. It sounds like you're doing something wrong. Take each of those issues separately, and ask a specific question about it. It's hard to separate your different issues from that one big paragraph.

And asking what's the best GUI builder is like asking what's the best-smelling garbage dump. The answer is none of them.

I appreciate the answer, i actually figured out the issues a minute ago. I reinstalled netbeans and used one of their example apps. Then i discovered there is a built in gui editor in netbeans :P

You're going to regret that discovery. It's categorically not a beginners' tool.

I understand that. I have used a gui editior before but it was in visual studio. I understand this one may be a little more complicated...am i right to assume that its not much harder to learn?

What is the basis for your assumption? Darryl suggested not to use such a tool and even supplied a very usefull link.

    kind regards,

My basis is that the interface looks similar to that of visual studio's. I am going through some of the tutorials given by the previous poster and it seems to be similar still to visual studio.

They are totally different beasts. C# was built in concert with Visual Studio's form builder from the onset, and the so the two are closely linked. NetBean's type of form builder seems more of an after-thought. It's easy to use for easy GUI's, but once you try to make anything even modestly complex, it gets much harder to use if you don't understand the basics of Swing.

Alright thanks i appreciate it. I don't plan on making anything very complicated quite yet so hopefully my knowledge will be sufficient
