JVM or Compiler

I have a doubt that "JVM or compiler" which one is important

Ya, I know about these two.. But I cant justify which one is more important???

For example: Which is more important: your left foot or your right foot?

Please explain what each of those programs do.

Compiler converts source code to byte code and gives that to JVM. JVM takes that byte code and gives us predicted thing..
I know both are important... When I come across this question what I need to tell in interviews??

Compiler converts source code to byte code and gives that to JVM.

The compiler creates byte code from the source code, in the form of .class files.
It doesn't then pass them to the JVM.
