Question compiling problem in Windows 7 with jre6...

first of all i m new both to this forum and Java, so pardon me for any mistakes and if i irrittate u with my question...
i get the message "javac is not recognised as an internal or external command......" when i use the javac command for compiling my program....
i read a lot of threads on this forum for finding a solution to my problem, i understood the problem is with the path... i added the bin directory path using a semicolon at the end to the Path in System variables but it still didnt work... i dont know if its because i m using Windows 7, tell me what should i do..... also 2 other things, first i guess there should be a file named javac in my bin folder but surprisingly there isnt, there is a file present called java and another file named javacpl (which probably is the java control panel) but no javac, my java version is jre6 update 27, i dont know where is the javac file stored in this version..... plus the 2nd thing, tell me if while changing settings in environment variables, do i have to change only the path in Path entry in System variables or do i also have to do something with the User variables ??
please help me out, i m really frustrated....

Which jdk version are you using? Is it a 64 bit version or a 32 bit version?

ok i m a little confused about this because of the sheer lack of knowledge....
is it like i need both the jre and jdk to run java ?? what i thought was these are all basically java versions only with different names like jdk, jse, j2se, j2ee, jre etc. as they keep changing names all the time with therir versions and installing any of them would do....
please enlighten me if i am wrong.
