What's the best book,instructional vids on learning Java,if you're a total beginner?
As I prefer a book or videos to online tutorials, can anyone please recommend what you consider is the best book/s and/or instructional videos to get, for learning Java programming (not to be confused with Javascript) at university, if you're a total beginner who's never done programming before, with little knowledge of how to use the proper syntax terminology required and little help is offered by a teacher.
There's a Javascript for Dummies book, but unfortunately there isn't a similar book for Java. Please say why anything recommended, is better than other book/s or video/s.

Did you read my post? I suggested 5-6 books that I like with a quick description of why I liked them. Head first java is probably my favorite beginner book.

Hi y'all,
I'm new here and I am not sure if this thread still requires more posting but i just felt like helping so...
If you're looking for a JAVA book for beginners you should try "JAVA How To Program by Deitel" a very exhaustive book for beginners. I highly recommend it

Ah OK. Your old sig reminds me of a Marty Feldman sketch from many years ago, something along the lines of:
Annoying man on park bench next to businessman reading newspaper:
Annoying man: "Of course many people mistakenly think that the whale is a fish..."
Businessman: "Really?"
Annoying man: "Yes, but the whale isn't a fish at all... it's an insect."
etc.
