Default how can i open a .class in a text editor

so i downloaded an open source game because i want to be able to open the text and see what it looks like, to the best of my knowledge everything is in a .class file. I cannot seem to find a way to open the text, am i looking in the wrong place?

I know this is prolly a very newb question, but this is the first time i have ever tried to do this.

.class files are the computer-language conversion of your original .java file.

Therefore, unless you're a computer you won't be able to understand the contents (which you can see for yourself using Notepad), therefore use a Java decompiler.
