Hi,
When I search through job postings for Java jobs, I notice a nice handful of them want you to have experience with Linux. What type of experience does the average java job want you to have with Linux? Server admin type experience? A lot of command line stuff or mostly GUI interface?

We use Linux mostly at our office. You should definitely know the basics. If you already know Unix, then you're fine in this area. If not, learn how to navigate the operating system (change directory, copy file, delete file, change permissions, check processes, check disk usage, file transfers, etc.)
As for programming, it depends on the job. C, C++, and Linux are common choices on Linux. If your writing scripts, it could be shell or perl. Some free databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL are available on Linux too.
If you want to play around with Linux, check out some of the free Linux distributions out there. One of them is Ubuntu. You can install it or simply run it from the CD (in memory) just to try it out.

It's similar:
DOS --> Linux
copy cp
cd cd
dir ls
erase rm
ftp ftp
It's not too hard to get started. Then you'll just need time to learn the ins and outs.
