Java 1.7
Im looking for a download link to install java 1.7 onto my cent os 5.5 64 bit server.
I went to centos forums and they seem to be clueless as to how i can get 1.7 on my server so i figured i would try the java forums. I have also searched through google and just cant seem to get 1.7 onto my server. Ive tried methods that claim to be 1.7 but upon checking the version its 1.6.

And Google didn't lead to you the Oracle site for early access JDK 1.7?
I find that hard to believe.

Try this link; note though that Java 1.7 still isn't officially released.

Duh, I was typing my reply while you pressed 'submit' for your's. Personally I don't think much of Java 1.7; the funniest feature (closures) isn't implemented yet and it's open source which can lead to many different versions, all vendor bound of course ...
kind regards,

Ive downloaded the tar.gx file for the 1.7 jre and un zipped it into a folder in my root directory. I have no idea how to install from here.
With 1.6 it was as simple as yum install java so im at a loss

Then you'll have to find a CentOS forum to see how stuff gets installed on there manually. There might be something on the Java Oracle pages, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Why do you need 1.7?
I'd have given up by now...

I'd clear out everything (using yum presumably for 1.6) and reload 1.6.
1.7 isn't really intended for anything other than beta work.

I wouldn't use it until it was officially released, and even then I'd wait for a couple of patch runs.
It isn't ready yet.

Thats not the point of this topic. Im not asking for advice on using 1.7 i am asking for advice on how to install it. I understand its not ready etc, i know all of that and have done my research. Im not trying to get it so i can have the latest java, i do have actual reasons.

The thing is it's a Linux installation thing.
Same as any other manual Linux installation (ie outside of packaging systems).
I doubt anyone here (as witnessed by the deathly silence) knows how to do that.
So you ought to ask at either a CentOs or Linux forum...not about installing 1.7, but about manually installing anything on Linux, and the possible gotchas.
