    Default What next in Java?

Alright, so I've been doing several things at Java, but wondering what to do next.

I know (probably) all the Java basics(loops, if,else, variables, methods, classes) and "stuff" like that. I've created several classes and got the hang of how this works. I've also been doing stuff in the swing package(JComponent and all subclasses).

So; What should I learn next?

Try to understand "Design Patterns"; they're fun.

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. It wasn't until I started reading about these animals that I understood the power of an interface.

Yep, that pattern business is interesting, isn't it? What 'irritates' me a bit is the lack of scientific foundation of it all, I mean, those patterns are presented as a solution to a certain type of problem (or 'class' of problems) and that's it. Are those patterns orthogonal? i.e. is each and every one of them necessary? I don't know because I even don't know an algebra that sufficiently describes the problem space. Are they sufficient? I guess not because we even don't know the size of the entire problem space. I think we're just at the stage of 'alchemy' with those patterns ...

    kind regards,

    Jos
