Generate printed document with background image

I have data from XML that I need to print on top of images. Specifically, these are prepared forms with borders, fixed sizes, etc. I want to specify the image file and format the data to print in absolute positions on the page. I've looked through the docs on determining font sizes, printing multiple pages, etc. I think I can handle that. I just haven't been able to figure out how to draw my text on top of an image. The images are whole page images (some portrait, some landscape).
