Default java 2 books ok to learn with?

I found core java 2 volume 1 fundamentals and sams teach yourself in 21 days in a book store for 4 bucksa piece. is it ok to learn java with these even though they are sdk 1.4? or are they too outdated?

No, 1.4 will work just fine as long as ju do not want to do in to newer advanced stuff.

But if you using and of the following classes, I recommend you look into generics (e.g. ArrayLista<E>):
    ArrayList
    Vector
    HashSet
    Hashtable (use HashMap instead)
    HashMap
ArrayDeque (I think this was added in 1.6)
    or any other collection class.
    Ex animo! Hibernate
Java, Arch Linux, C, GPL v3, Bash, Eclipse, Linux VT, GNOME 2 and many buttons on windows.

I would suggest reading SCJP by Kathy and Bert Bates if you have certification in your mind for future.
