Somebody please help me!

I have had this problem for a year or so and I have spent so long trying to fix it I feel like I am going to fucking cry.

I have the latest java and JDK. I can not run any .jar files. I can play stuff that uses java through my browser but cannot run a program off my hard drive. I am using vista.

Let me explain it in a simple form:

1. Father downloaded new java I think and maybe something else like windows update.
2. When I try to run my .jar files it says it doesnt know what to open it with.
3. Ages trying to fix it.
4. .jar files open a black command prompt box with text for a split second then it closes instantly.
5. uninstalled all my java staff again.
6. Reinstalled the newest Java and JDK.
7. See step 4.

Come on you guys are proper java people doesnt anybody have a solution?!

Thanks it looks like that making it go to the defined jartype with the jarfile thing might work but can you please explain how I do that step by step?

Feeling really upset again now this is so stressful

Go to:
- Windows Start menu
- Run
- regedit (Type it)
- Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

If .jar exists the the tree remove it. ;)

Right click at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and select
- new
- key
and name the new key (folder): .jar

in .jar, right click at (Default) and press Modify...
and edit the value to myjar

Right click at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and select
- new
- key
and name the new key (folder): myjar


Add key "shell" to "myjar", "open" to "shell" and "command" to "open"

"(Default)" in "myjar" should be valued: Executable Jar File
"(Default)" in "command" should be valued: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1" %*

"(Default)" in "shell" and "open" should be unset.

does that work with vista?

Additionally we can add an option (right click on the jar file) to open with a terminal emulator (Command Prompt):

To key "shell" add key "terminal".
To key "terminal" add key "command".

Set "(Default)" for "terminal" to "Open with Terminal".
Set "(Default)" for "command" to: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -jar "%1" %*

Sorry but I dont know what you mean. I dont know those terms "to key then add" and all that. Id need someone to explain it in plain english to me :(

And just for fun, we can add an icon for .jar files:

To key "myjar" add key "DefaultIcon".
Set "(Default)" in "DefaultIcon" to: %SystemRoot%\System32\java.exe,1

This should work on all Windows version from Windows 95,
and I have tested it on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Note that I have specified my installation folder for Java, may differ from you installation.

Which is the first step you do not understand?

But like I said, I can't do that stuff Id need it in plain english you were using terms like "Key" and id need to know exactly wat to do :(
