    Question Good overall book?

    i searched the forums before i posted this but all the other threads were about people looking for books for specific java programming.

    what iam looking for is a book which starts with the basics but doesnt end with simple calculations programs, ive read about the first half of the official java tutorials (form their website) but it mostly just explains what the different things are called and without using them you forget everything quiet quickly, ive managed to make two programs, one where you type in any number and it adds each one together and gives you the answer (e.g. 3: 1+2+3=6) and an encryption program that uses a password to decrypt and encrypt. btw, i made those programs within 1-2 days but dont get the wrong idea, the book can start with the very basics.
    but i dont really know anything else apart from if then and else commands.
    what i had trouble with was understanding the stuff with the bicycle (in the java instructions), declaring classes and all the stuff with the objects, i especially never understood the part with
    PHP Code:
    public class encrypter {
    and
    PHP Code:
    public static void main (String[] args){
    so if like a book which starts back with step one and which doesnt just explain what everything is but shows you how to use everything, not sure how to explain it. my goal would be to be able to program simple flash rpg type of games to give you an idea of what i want to achieve.

    it could be a good starting book and then one which will help me later on, i just dont want a book that ill only use for one week and then ill need another one, neither should i have to look in the internet for starting tutorials because i cant understand the book cause it moves on too fast or starts too complicated.

    wow, this got rather long, well i wanted you guys to know what i dont want and what i want. if you know a book that found good to start with but think i wont like it still post it, only say why i probably wouldn't like it.

    they look good, but what i read in reviews, it says they are for people who have learned a program language and now want to learn java, i have no previous knowledge of any program language.

    I've heard good things about Head First Java, though I haven't read it myself.

    Edit: if your goal is to create a Flash RPG, maybe you'd be better learning Flash.

    I'm reading through the Head First Java book now. It does not "read" like your normal text book does, but it does explain the Object-Oriented concepts very well. :)
