Help with LCDUI limitations!

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum so feel free to tell me that this is in the wrong place!

I'm not a developer and I've never used Java. However, I'm a designer currently working on a project that involves LCDUI and need some help and advice on it's limitations.

I've been tasked with designing a user interface but first need to know what is and isn't possible (from an interface point of view - e.g. what menu functions are available, are there any themes that I can apply, etc?). The final product will be a stand alone app on Java enabled devices. I understand that LCDUI is very limiting, so any help will be greatly received!

What type of LCD is it? What is it's screen resolution? Number of colours? Can you use AWT and/or Swing? Refresh speed?

Hi Jos,

Thanks for posting back. It's quite vague to be honest - the target devices are "all mobile phones that run and are Java enabled" so ascertaining screen size and type is not possible. The software will be updated over the air (OTA) so keeping file size to a minimum is imperative. As for AWT and / or Swing, I'd assume not, due to file size.

If we're talking phones we're talking 320x240 or 640x480 resolution (I don't know about the colour depth). Most j2me editions (CDC and CLDC configs) support a limited version of AWT and Swing; check out your configuration(s).

No way to check configurations I'm afraid as the software will be purchasable by the general public. As such it will be compatible with as many different devices as possible.

Sorry to be vague on this but that's all I've got! I've just learnt that we're going to be using a high level UI approach - is there any program where I can simply open up a list of pre defined widget components and just see what's available to me?

Sure, check your j2me edition and see which Swing components are implemented. They have more or less standardized what should be present and what not.
