how can I build a telephone program

I have learned how to communicate with serial ports and read and write from and to them
how can I communiate with my modem and dial a number and wait for a call and send/recive information via modem like which is in HyperTerminal program of windows?

i'm pretty sure the modem uses textual commands, sending ATDT ####### will dial ?

once connected the remote system might use its own control characters, such as ANSI or VT100 . there is a vt100 terminal part of jcraft jcterm project for that.

so some menus and gui to invoke these characters and display output.
