I circumvent those problems by using PrimoPDF; it's a free PDF generator that serves as a (virtual) printer; all you have to do is print your .doc file and that printer driver does the rest (i.e. it generates a pdf file for you, it works great).

    kind regards,

    Jos

For your information: the wheel has already been invented; why try to do it again?

But that's what I wrote in my first reply: I circumvent the problem by using that (free) PrimoPDF software; it works great, images included and all. Why go trhough the burden writing your own solution?

    kind regards,

    Jos

webcraft, the problem is that there's no open-source program that does what you want (as much as I know).
Although, what josAH has given is a free software, it's not an open-source software and that's why
the answer to your question is : "there's no lines of code to what you want and we don't
know how it has been done".

Download and install the PrimoPDF sofware; print your .doc file and select the PrimoPDF 'printer' (mind the quotes); it asks you the name of a file and there it goes: it creates a .pdf file from your .doc file; it can also do excel files or whatever.
