Can not remove or update JAVA RE

Hi,

Sorry for newbieness of the questions.

I am having a problem updating/reinstalling and/or removing "jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe"

I cannot find it in either Add/Remove or with Revo Uninstaller but when I try to install it, I get error messages asking "if I would like to reinstall it" when I say yes, it is followed by an error message saying that "the previous message only related to installed software"? The round and round we go.

I have installed and uninstalled and then reinstalled version 19 and tried to update that but I get the same merry go around of messages.

So now I have an apparent version 19 on board that wants to be updated and a hidden version of version 20 that says that it is or maybe not there.

Help .. how do I remove or update the version 20 if I cannot find it?

Security Software: Online Armor Firewall Premium Version 4.0.0.45, Avira GmbH - AntiVir Desktop Premium Version 10.0.0.603, Advanced SystemCare Pro 3.5.1 plus assorted proactive protectors i.e. Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, WinPatrol, and passive scanners A-Squared Free, SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes AntiMalware, HitMan Pro 3.5 etc. Also utilize Sandboxie and Host Files.

Man that's lot of security software installed. Try removing with some of the security software in OFF mode.
If NOT,
While uninstalling, jdk gets removed while jre with some files remains(I think).
If nothing works, just delete the file(shift + delete).
If necessary open registry and search jre1.6.20 then delete that value.

Security wise, only the Online Armor Firewall and Avira Antivir plus ASC are proactive. Winpatrol is not longer on board, sorry.

Searched the Registry and could not find any JRE 1.6.20 entries but I still get the "round and round the merry go-round" messages re: is already installed do you want to reinstall and then this only applies to installed software.

What next?

That file is the Java installer itself; it isn't an installed Java distribution; you first have to run that file. If you don't want that you can simply throw away that file.

Again applying self flagellation for my newbieness.

What I meant was, if I try to run/execute/install "jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe" all I get are these ridiculous circuitous error messages.

However I seem to be able to install any other previous versions of Java JRE I like. Problem is they then want to be updated and I end up back at square one with the "this program is already installed would you like to reinstall, followed by this option is only vailable if the program is already installed etc. etc. etc. etc.

How do I un-install all and or any versions and or remnants of this, and or any other JAVA installations, so that I can properly install and use a complete and uncorrupted operational version.

You are correct, I do not want to remove "jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe", I want to install it.

I'd try to do it this way: remove that installer file and navigate to Configuration Screen>Programs and remove everything that has the word 'Java' in it. Afterwards check your installation directories (\Program Files) and remove all the JRE and JDK stuff that might still be there.

Next download the latest Java distribution and allow it to install itself; don't just download the installer file. See if that helps ...

OK you lost me there. How do I get there ............... step by step for a 5 year old.

Tried and deleted a bunch of stuff and went back and got the 900Kb installation file (Java Distribution ?) and ended up with those dumb arz$%$#@ messages again.

Help.

For an MS Windows machine: press the 'Start' menu (bottom left); select 'Configuration' (or similar). Find the 'Programs' option (or similar). Remove everything that even smells like Java.

Hi,:D

Gave up and took the chicken's way out. Downloaded and then installed a beta of jre 6u21. Worked like a charm. Then used JavaRa to clean out all the old copies of Java and any left over bits.

So now I have 6u21 up and working and every thing seems OK.
