I just answered a similar question so why not copy my answer here too:
Study Sun's Java Tutorials. It contains lots of exercises and thoroughly explains the (basics of the) Java language. Start at the beginning and don't just browse through it but study the 'trails' (sections of the tutorial); it pays back.

I recommend you to study NetBeans to create your first desktop app easy and quickly
first download the IDE from here http://netbeans.org/downloads/index.html
and then follow these tutorials
