    I've never worked anywhere that didn't have a repository...I think you misread.
    I said not everywhere has automated code formatting prior to entry in a repository. Consequently I code against the lowest common denominator.

    I realized that so I added an 'edit' to my previous reply. I hate those religeous wars on code format so I let a program do the tedious work ;-)

    I don't find it tedious...I just have a code habit that includes the most open techniques, the sort that reduce silly bugs that the newer developers might not spot.

    If someone wants to enforce "curly braces on a separate line" over "open brace on the same line" or vice versa, then yes...they can supply the formatter.

    I don't find it tedious either: I simply type away my style and have the stuff formatted their way by a formatter. Not using curly braces for single statements is simply burned in my fingers, I can't help it ;-)
