XML, and other things.

Hello.

I'm very (as in VERY) new to JAVA. I have been coding in AS3 for a fair while and know it well, but I'm looking to move to a platform that will let me do more with data. I want to be able to write as well as read XML for example. The one thing that is making me wary of moving away form Flash and AS3 are systems such as TweenMax, the ability to use Illustrator artwork etc. I wonder if anyone can share their views on JAVA with XML, can store variables in it for use later? How about graphics and animation libraries etc.

Since you are new to Java, but not completely new to programming, I recommend, in this order:

Eclipse and Java for Total Beginners

Introducing Persistence

(Mark Dexter has two other tutorials that you may find useful, but you can do them later.)

The Java™ Tutorials

The Java(TM) Web Services Tutorial

That's a lot to work through. Take your time, and do the exercises. Don't be in too much of a rush -- you'll save more time in the long run by being patient with yourself. Good luck, and have fun!

Wow, that's what I call a friendly and incredibly helpful response. Thank you, I'm downloading Eclipse now and have set aside a few days to get through that lot.

No doubt I'll see you again on this forum, with plenty of stupid questions. :)

The Mark Dexter tutorials can be done in a few days, no problem. You could get through them both in one business day without straining too much, but take two days with them anyway. The Java Tutorials, however, will take longer. I still say take your time with them. Resist the inclination to skim over things. Actually typing in code, even code that you already understand, will help to cement it into your brain. Be patient up front, and you'll be rewarded with lots and lots of time saved later on.
