Yes it's a waste of time. You're far better off learning visual basic.
Not reallly. In Texas all programming classes are Java in school. If you learn it and get really good with it you will have a shot. Java is different than most languages, you can use the same code on any platform[.class] files.

No Knowledge is a waste. Learn Java wherever you can and you will work with it wherever you must. Learn Java and you will get a job when the time comes. Americans have not stopped recruiting Java programmers.
I always believe the quest for elegant design, and the passion for doing things well should be a first priority. the needs to learn some language for a job should be secondary.
It just so happens [for me] that currently Java happens to be the generally most suitable environment for fulfilling these desires, with the natural side effect of bringing system security, scaleability, and code reuse to the table, with a reasonable level of long term maintainability.
That is to say, if you want to 'learn' java just for making a buck. then the hard core developers out there that are doing it first and foremost to solve problems will roller you over every time; in other words, It's not about who is using some language and where, but rather how.
