You can try Head first series of Core Java and also try "Java BlackBook" by Dream tech publications.
But make sure that you have a good grip over object oriented programming.

Hello,
I have been avoiding bookshops lately as there are so many good and new Java books out there that I was tempted to buy more than I could read. There are also so many good Java tutorial websites out there that I bookmarked more that I could revisit to learn. If you are going to buy books, do not buy too many and if you are going to learn from websites, use the ones that specifically address your immediate need or problem.
However, I am also still learning and have found these websites useful.
1) The Java™ Tutorials
2) Learn Java programming tutorial lesson 1 - First Program

I saw a remark about data persistence... Do a google search on Java Serialization, as Java comes with streams designed to write and read objects.
If the above doesn't make sense to you, ignore it, but remember it - might be useful!
And if you just randomly taught yourself to program, well... you're just like me!

You should try: Java: How to Program by Deitel & Deitel publishing 6th edition. This one book has many exercises for users/students to get that practical coding experience from.
