im a newbie creating a calendar planner

If I were to make a simple calendar planner, what should I know first? should i learn about date class or calendar class.

The Java SDK Date and Calendar classes are, to put it mildly, not as well-designed or easy to use as they could be. I would strongly recommend that you use a good external date/time library such as Joda Time (the basis for the new date/time APIs in Java 7 - see JSR-310).
