help with textpad and jdk

I am trying to use textpad and I was told I need to download either jkd or skd(java) I was told first downlaod the java and then download the textpad which I did. But when I tried to compile and run my program it did nothing, so my teacher said I had to click on tools go to preference and down to tools and click the add button in textpad but I did something wrong. Was I suppose to do something once I downloaded the jdk?Could someone tell me the steps I need, I have vista and I just want to be able to compile and run my programs in textpad, and I need very detailed instructions because I do not know which jdk to download and do I use ftp or http? please help. :confused:

JDK 6u13 / FX 1.1 is probably the download you want. Once it's installed you configure textpad to use javac.exe to compile your code and java.exe to run it.

ok so now I know which one to download but once I download it is there anything in particular I do? because when I downloaded the other jdk I did not do anything but download it and then textpad and still nothing.
