Default Java ms Access and pc serial ports

I've been programing for years but have never seen anything quite like Java.
I want to duplicate a VB6 program in Java and it uses ms Access to save data and also uses serial ports to talk to instruments.
From what I've read so far I'm not to sure these are common in Java.
Or how I might do this - examples.

    Any suggestions or comments, thanks

    Thanks for taking the time.

I have read about Javax.comm and RXTX. But mostly the comments are that these don't work well or at all. I have not found any examples of code that people claim work properly.
Again I need to say, I'm really new to java. I just want to hear someone say " I use ?????? all the time, and it works well" to operate the serial RS232 ports on most PC type computers running windows XP.

The same goes for microsoft Access. Lots of info about SQL data base but I don't have SQL.
Again, I'm really new to java, I could easily be missing to boat, just not getting it.

To sum up, I'm looking for a project in java. A little beyond "Hello World".
I'm just tring to get a feel for what I can do with java.
Using USB ports with serial RS 232 adapters would work too, I've yet to see infomation on those either.

    Thanks.
    I agree.
I will stick to textbooks (from University courses friends have taken)

When I get the OBDC interface under my hat I'll come back to the data bases.

Serial ports (RS 232) are from days gone by. I will forget about them as well.
