New to Java Forums and New to Java: Hi!
Hi, I'm Gabrielle. I've been in tech support for 10 years and do enjoy writing fairly basic HTML. But I recently got a G1 and want to learn to write programs for it.
Thus my foray into Java (and eventually XML).
I have Eclipse, but just following the tutorials and that left me boggled still. I need to know the why's of the codes I'm putting in. HTML was a boggle to me when I looked at source code until I learned what the tags meant.
So, I had my husband go to the library and find me some books. He got what I think is a good one (by the same folks whose book taught me HTML in 3 days). So, with this book, I'm using just a plain text editor (SuperNotetab).
After some initial frustration, I did get my first little thing to work, the example from Chapter 1 in the book.
But I did hit an error and I'm hitting them again. The book can't help you when you get an error. So I google. And I try the things I find when I google, but I still get an error, so I followed this link from Google and sign up.
I hope I'll be able to find some patient coaches out there who'll help me figure out what I did or didn't do when I stumbled, so that I can *understand* what's going on with this code and work it out.
Thanks.

Welcome. I hope you find programming interesting.
I have eclipse also.
I don't use it. I use notepad and the console (Windows).
The eclipse tutorials are mind boggling. They use simple
java concepts as a basis for presenting features of eclipse.
They're eclipse tutorials, not java tutorials. Don't let the
java context confuse you, don't look to these tutorials
as a means to learn java.

Post the code and the error messages so we can help you. There are 10,000 java books out there, so It's pretty much impossible for us to guess at what you're talking about.

hello to both!
It seems your already on the right path of try something, if it doesnt work, internet search it and try it again.
Getting java setup for developing is a task all in itself, if you're at that stage, cudos.
I personally use JCreator. To me its a notch up from using notepad and the console compiler because it does both for you, plus tabbed input for different files and colored syntax recognition. If you like Notepad, check out notepad++, basically notepad with tabbed GUI and syntax recognition which works great for most different languages including HTML and PHP.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who doesn't use IDE's. I was starting to think I was just a relic from the past.
