How to use the Java API specifications

Many times when suggesting links and info to posters in this forum (specially newbies), we generally post links that go to the Sun's tutorial or/and to the Java API specification.
Now, using the tutorial is pretty simple (no brainer), but I was wondering the following:

• How many people actually use the suggested API link to solve their problem? and...
• If they do go to the suggested Java API link, how many would actually know what to do with it and use it to their advantage?

Answers to the above might lead to the follwing question:

• How can we (the regs) help people to use and understand the Java API specs?

The only way I know how is to encourage them to keep at it. Understanding of the ways of the API only comes through repeated use of it. I can't think of any shortcuts here. Perhaps someone smarter will though...

I couldn't agree more on what fubarable said. Repeated use is the only way to go. And it also helps to understand the index better so you can search for the classes needed. (well, i have it on usb, so no google while on the go...)

maybe you should start a poll (for newbies only) to find out how many finds the API confusing to use.
