A .jar is simply a Zip compressed archive which contains java classes and other files. tools.jar is a generic name, so you should indicate the site which you downloaded it from

I was trying to install Glassfish & got this error "Unable to locate tools.jar Expected to find it in C:\Program Files\Java\jre1. 6.0\lib\tools.jar" So was wondering what did this jar file contain specifically

Are you sure that you get this at installation, or else did you get that error on an application? I didn't see any such default jar file in my installation.

Yes, while after unbundling the glassfish jar, I tried to run this command
% lib/ant/bin/ant -f setup.xml
