I think I have something better. ;) Tons of links there. (You must type yes in the box on the page you get redirected to, after that, you're redirected to the topic.)

The best online book is on the "SUN" off-site,it opens all the java concepts, maybe in some aspects it is very short but very comprehensive.

Yes online sun tutorials are very helpful. I'd suggest that you start with Netbeans IDE for your comfort. good luck

    Welcome to Java world. :)

Actually you have to decide which book is the best for you, depends on your ability to have learn new things. Use any book which explain basis in Java with workout examples. So the best thing is go to a book shop and read some pages roughly on few books. Then you can feel about the best. Just check this page, there are some books suitable for Java newbie.

And also if you are not keen on object oriented concepts in programming, it's better to refer some books related to it too.

Need a IDE also. I advice you in the beginning use a simple editor and later move to a higher level IDE. Initially you can use Notepad++ and command prompt on windows. It's simply highlighted key-words and really nice feature it is.
