developing chat application

so im at start of building chat application and i need help with the thinking thing..

if client A want to make a chat with client B the message of A need send to the server and the server send it to client B ?


it work like this or my thinking is not good ?

yea sure they are i mean like messenger
when u start program u type username and password then u connected with the server (each client)
and then each client has his friends and when he want chat with some1 it will do that thing

it need to be multithearded client or somthing ?

Not really, no -- you absolutely must use multithreading for this type of application, else there is no way for the server to service multiple clients without blocking.
