Default Voice chat with multiple chat rooms, suggestions needed

    Hello everyone.

I need to develop a chat software that supports voice, and enables users to create their own chat rooms.
I'm fairly new to Java and have just started network programming, so could you suggest me the things I'll need to study to achieve this??

    Thanks in advance.

You aren't going to like this, but my honest suggestion is to start smaller. This isn't a trivial project. I'd start with a much much smaller project, then work up to this one.

Exactly my point :) In fact I've got some 6/7 months for this. So i need to know what "smaller projects" I should be trying, you know, in order to head in the right direction.

I don't know, I guess that depends on what you already know. There are a bunch of aspects to your big project idea- try getting a simple GUI up and running, something like a simple button. Then try getting some networking (without a GUI) up and running- basic communication between two computers. If you get that working, combine the two- have a simple GUI support basic networking (aiming for a chat/IM clone would be a pretty high standard). Then maybe try thinking about how you'd do this with voice. It's not going to be simple.
