Default Are LAN only connections possible?

I am beginning to get involved in networking.
A simple question has occurred to me.

Is it possible for two computers to execute a
Java applet or application as a LAN network,
without a router, or gateway to the internet?

    Default

It should be possible, where this would be not specific to Java, but the IP address settings on the host computers set up manually to be unique within the same local subnet.
