Remote means two computers which are located in two different locations, like one in UK and the other one in Sri Lanka.

any java method in a class on the remote host (depending on the access rights on the host). as long you can connect to the host it doesn't matter where the host geographically resides. here is a simple Hello World code using rmi Getting Started Using Java RMI check it out, so you will know what we are talking about.

how about the security in RMI, is it secure enough?
if there's a firewall or others security system,
how can I use Java RMI through a firewall?

that depends on your rmi implementation and what you understand with "secure enough". rmi has a security maanager where you can enable different security features. in addition you can establish your connection through a ssl-socket. and for the firewall you have to enable the used ports by rmi in your firewall configuration otherwise they will be blocked. this is a firewall and not java issue.

There are enough ways to develop much secure systems using RMI. You can take different approaches. Search for RMI security features on Suns' tutorial.
