Default how to write to parallel port?

I have a project for school where i have to write to this device:
    ww.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1601.htm

my laptop doesn't have a parallel port so i bought a usb to parallel converter.

i've tried for about a month now to get this working in c++ but to no avail so i'm switching to java.

i'm using windows vista so of course the security doesn't let you have direct access to the ports and i just need a way to do it if netbeans can help me around this or anyone else knows a good and easy way please help me :)

anything i've found out there isn't for vista

    Hi there
although I am new with java interfacing but I think the javax.comm package doesn't support vista, So I think you have to be worried about using vista first.

Those devices could be damage a lot on your way. Selecting those device have to care of a lot. When comes to parallel ports, there are large number of variations based on the communication interface, for an example printer ports (LPT1, LPT2, ...). Testing those devices also really difficult and costly. Why don't you design your application based on serial ports.
