It can be advanced at times. But if you are wanting to learn, It would be an EXCELLENT way to progress with java. You can probably start with the easier things, such as adding methods, then build up into reflections, pixel scanning, etc.

Write a simple text editor. Then you can learn lots of various aspects on Java, with UI and backend coding.

I do agree with eranga..... Even I am a beginner and I am also developing a text editor and trust me am getting to learn a lot of new things...... Its a fact that when you develop something yourself and do research for that then you definitely get to learn a lot of new things which will help you in the current project as well as in the future projects also and will add to your knowledge too.......
So try to write a text editor and when you will succeed in that then you yourself will get confidence about your programming skills and will be able and confident about writting the more complex codes in future.

No mate, what I suggest is you to write a text editor, like Notepad, Notepad++ and so on. Not the same, but you can think about new functionality of your own. In that case you have to think about a layout or a theme or in other word look and feel. So you have to deal with layouts, images, styles and so on. Business logic sense you have to develop the functioning different features, such as open a new document, save, copy, cut, paste, print, etc.. That is basically your backend. You can use web services and so if you can think about what you could with that. For example post a status to twitter and on on.

In that sense you can cover huge area.
