i dont know much abt thesis things.
all i can talk about is mini projects.
you can create media players, text editors, file manipulators, dictionaries and all such kind of daily usage applications.
u can apply this wonderfull language to develop anything and almost everything which you have heared of.
regards
yo !!!

What kind of thesis is this? Undegraduate, ms, phd?
I guess ti is undergraduate thesis. Otherwise it is strange.
and what is your interest. I think the most importing thing is to develop sth you are interested. If you are interested in robotics, you can develop a simulator. If you are interested in graphics, you can develop a 3d renderer in java or extend an existing one..

What ever the language you used, programming on the server is the most effective. You have a chance to learn a lot.
In Java this scenario become much specific. More reasons for that.
One is about platform independent, and also categorized about platform like mobile, desktop and many more things.

For my undergraduate thesis I attempted to write an artificial neural network, this was actually very difficult and I ended up with a working prototype and a pretty decent 15,000 word written thesis as well.
I think now after working in industry though I would attempt to write an MVC distributed system. I would use jsp\.net as the display, oracle for the database model and I would use servlets and beans. It would be pretty to cool to adapt this and use php for the front end display (if you can call web services thorugh it).
You could use axis or something similar to expose your java methods to interact with the database over SOAP webservices and use tomcat to drive your servlets and axis on a different machine.
That would be a pretty cool project as you could have a front end on windows, tomcat and axis and apache running on a linux server and oracle running on another machine or the same linux machine. Users would browse to your front end and every call would be made remotely via web services.
Ok sorry for the rambling but it is Friday afternoon!
Cheers and good luck with your thesis.
