Default Soon to graduated, thinking about freelance work

I couldn't find a general talk forum here so I hope this is the right place.

I am going to be graduating college soon (CIS degree), and when I went into this program it was with the intent of becoming my own start up contract software company. I'm thinking general programming on whatever someone would want in Java. I was wondering if there are others here on the forums who are also freelance programmers? Do you have any advice for someone who will be setting up shop, so to speak, in a few months?
As for income now, my wife works for the post office and makes pretty good money. Enough for us to live on for reasonably well until I get some practical experience and clients.

Thanks for any advice that you may have!

You might want to put together a portfolio website of some kind. What kind of work are you looking for?

I'm not sure what type of work right now. I guess I had planned on letting the work needed from contract sites such as vWorker dictate where I go. I know I want to stay with using Java and possibly visual basic and C#. Anything more specific than that I'm not sure of. Kevin-are you saying that I should have a website that shows screenshots of the programs I've written, or have a downloads page on the website so that possible clients can download my sample software and install that on their computers?

Thanks for the advice so far...looking for more please.

Well, think about it this way- say you're going to hire a freelance photographer. Wouldn't you expect to see a website showcasing his/her work? The same logic applies to any freelancer, including programming.

And a website of downloads is what I had in mind, but code samples, screenshots, etc. are better than nothing.

Full disclosure- I'm not a freelancer, I'm just talking about what I would expect if I was looking to hire one.
