    Default 2D Multiplayer

    Hey guys.

So, I'm fairly experienced with Java. Does anybody have any ideas as to where I could go to find a decent tutorial on putting together multiplayer games? In simple 2D, of course. Any decent tutorials/walkthroughs. Maybe a good channel on youtube?

    Thanks,
    Alex

That's a "try google" question if ever I saw one. Come on man, you have the world wide web available to you - use it.

Wow, amazing that I didn't find see this reply originally.

I'm very well aware of what I have at my disposal. The reason I ask here should be obvious. There are hundreds and hundreds of guides out there. Some of the guides are correct, others are not. Some have lots of views, others have very few. Remarkably, even some of the most viewed ones can be bad or misleading.

Obviously I'm asking to get an opinion from someone who maybe has some experience with going through tutorials and can recommend one that was best for them, so I don't have to waste my time going through an incorrect or useless tutorial. If you don't know, simply don't answer - your response didn't help me at all.

But tutorials are really something very individual. Something that was great for me can be complete crap for you. (And I am quite sure about that, because you even asked for youtube channels. And video tutorials are the biggest crap in the world in my eyes :) )

And also be aware that the free tutorials often just cover small aspects. To fully understand something you should research an area completely. (So even tutorials are wrong in my eyes. I tend to do a research from bottom up. So if I want to build a multiplayer game, then I would do a general research on that which is not java based. What are the real concerns that you have to take care of? What are the technical solutions? Without that knowledge a tutorial will give you some piece of code but you are missing the basics to understand the code or to see if it is good or bad.)

So if you want to use a tutorial for a quick start, then I would suggest to use google, look at the tutorials that you find and then go through multiple tutorials. Often they have comments - so if you look at the comments then you can see the opinion of different people. And you have a good chance to hopefully see multiple issued and how you could deal with them.

And even if not asked for that: I completely prefer books. I got a subscription to technical books (oreilly offers safaribooksonline which can be quite cheap. I pay about 10 US$/month only.) That gives me a good set of books which are mostly quality checked and the author really sat down and was thinking about the overall thing. And he completed it as a book. Tutorials are often small parts, disconnected from each other. And maybe the Author wants to add more parts but right now it simply ends somewhere in the middle ... Just my perspective. I do not say, that the world is that way - I just say that I see the world like this which might be wrong ...

I want to agree with you Konrad and in any other thread I would, but this is the subject of game programming which is something quite visually oriented; video tutorials actually DO work quite well in that arena :)

But it depends on the topic, a video tutorial on the game loop is going to be the same useless "dude writing code while blabbing along" video. Its a 50/50 deal, some things are better learned by reading about it and then experimenting with it "as per usual". In any case, if you want to do it all in Java, then start with LibGDX. The resources to learn it are found through Google.
