Default Java web start issue depending on network connection

    Dear knowledgeable people,

I would like to bring forward an issue I encounter when using a Java web start application. First however I would like to point out that I'm not a developer myself and that the application as-is is successfully used by 1000's of people. Together with the developers we cannot find the source of the problem I encounter.

This is what happens. When I open the .jsp via the website's link, the web start initializes and starts downloading the application. Next, it switches to the "Verification" stage and after a couple of seconds it returns this error:

    Exception:
com.sun.deploy.net.FailedDownloadException: Unable to load resource: <link>

    at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

    Wrapped exception:
java.util.zip.ZipException: ZIP file must have at least one entry

    at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run (Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

When I close the error message and reclick the link to the .jsp file, I get this error message instantaneously (i.e. the thing is downloaded).

This occurs using JRE 6.14 or 6.2x. These are the only versions that are supported by the application. I use Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64 bit (two different PCs) and both IE 8 and Firefox 14.0.1.

Now, the curious thing is that this error occurs when I'm browsing from my home network. When I disconnect from my home network and set up a wireless access point by tethering my mobile 3G connection and use this to browse the internet, the error doesn't occur and the applications opens correctly. So: something prevents launching this application when being on my home network. I use a cable internet connection.

I tried disabling both my PC's firewall as the firewall of my Linksys WRT54GCv3 router and added my PC's IP address to the demilitarized zone. This however doesn't aid in solving the problem. We don't manage to converge our problem analysis to a limited set of possible causes. What settings could cause this? Is it something in the router's configuration? Is it IP-based? Is it a setting of JRE or in Windows?

I hope you could advise me how to proceed in finding the source of this problem, and of course how to solve it. Again, I would like to state that this application works fine for virtually all users, as it does for me when using a different internet connection. So it should be something local, but what?

Thanks in advance for any support I hopefully receive!
