Default How do i run a java applet

Hi.i am moving on with my java studies .Now i have started learning applets.Whe i try to run the demos that come with JDK using my web browser i get the following message:
alt="Your browser understands the <APPLET> tag but isn't running the applet, for some reason." Your browser is completely ignoring the <APPLET> tag!
I tried to copy an example from a book ,when i try to run it using my browser ,i get a screen with a small window (which i suppose should be the applet)inside it and the code for the applet.at the bottom there is a message that reads:"Internet explorer prevented this page from running scripts and active X contrls."When i click on "Allow blocked content ""that small window disappears and the code for the applet only remains on the screen.

I have also tried to run using applet viewer ,i get the message"cant read applet viewer properties...."

Can someone assist me on how to run applets.i am trying to read books and the internet but am not getting it.

    Thank you

Applet viewer is a command line program to run Java applets. It is included in the SDK. It helps you to test an applet before you run it in a browser.
