    Applets can't use: System.exit();

    What happens if you copy the html file and the jar file out of the IDE to a testing folder?

    What browser are you using to open the html file?
    If you don't understand my response, don't ignore it, ask a question.

    Default Re: java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

    "exit" is not in my code, and the only occurrence of it in the NetBeans generated JFrame code is:

    setDefaultCloseOperation(javax.swing.WindowConstan ts.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

    I'm using Firefox 12.0. I briefly tried IE with no avail.

    The error code is similar when running outside the IDE folders:

    I've never seen those error messages with any of my applets.
    setDefaultCloseOperation(javax.swing.WindowConstan ts.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    What happens when you remove that?

    java.lang.ClassCastException: melodicdirection.MelodicDirection cannot be cast to java.applet.Applet
    <applet code="melodicdirection.MelodicDirection.class"
    Does MelodicDirection extend the Applet class? Your html: <applet code= says it should.

    Have you read the tutorial about applets:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutori...let/index.html

    or are you making this up?

    MelodicDirection extends javax.swing.JFrame. I'm reading the tutorial now. Let me see what I can do, and then I'll post how it goes.

    A JFrame is not an applet.

    Default Re: java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

    I moved my code into a JApplet and I have a class with main that extends JApplet. The class with main is:

    public class MelodicDirectionTest extends JApplet {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    MelodicDirectionTestApplet mdta = new MelodicDirectionTestApplet();
    mdta.setVisible(true);
    }
    }

    NetBeans builds the project with no errors, but it doesn't bring up the gui when it's run. I think I once read that "this" must be past to the JApplet. Please help.
