MAC address capturing

I would like to capture MAC address (Physical address) of the client machine. Currently i have developed a Java applet which is giving problem if the JRE version is not correct. Please suggest some way for solving this issue. Please let me know if there is any other mechanism apart from Java applet and Active-X. (Note: Since this application is going to be accessed through Internet, it should work across all browsers and Apple Mac machines).
