Default Editing java app from existing app

I have this existing java app that when run through a decompiler shows you an email address. This app is meant to be distributed widely to anyone with a certain interest (I won't declare it here). You put your information (harmless things like your interest in music) and this information is sent to that email address. If I were to edit it and place another email address, would new information placed on it be sent to that new address? How do I go about doing this? With an editor? If so, can someone recommend one? I am literally new and nascent with java, and programming in general, I simply want to have that information sent to another address. Please any help is appreciated.

You shouldn't be doing this but rather should get the source code from its creators or distributors and edit that. Otherwise this doesn't sound too legal.

Oh don't worry, it's open source.

Good, then there's no need to de-compile. Get the source since it's openly available.

This may sound odd, but there is no source available, it's not really a big project, the creators just kind of made it for fun. So if I went ahead and did what I mentioned in the original post would it work?

Your plan is a poor one. If you are very new to Java, don't try to start by modifying decompiled code as I can guarantee you will not succeed. Regardless it still sounds fishy -- open source but no source?
