    Default applet servlet communication

    does the applet have to be signed to communicate with the servlet?

    No it doesn't.
    I had used HTTP passing serialized objects because the applet security
    allows HTTP traffic back to the original location of your applet.
    So, the applet did not need to be signed or anything like that.
