I do better with techies, I can provide some help. The dissertation thing is not exactly clear to me what you intend to say... Sometimes they ask things like how many caterpillars can climb a tree if the forest is a propogating ( .... ? .... )

Some people can do that well, I don't. If I may suggest a place to start:

Most thesis and exploratory work have an early phase where one cannot determine a subject matter. This is better approached by examining what areas ( real world, not the cs per se ) you as an individual have some interest in. Better if it is a strong interest. In any workup of an area, can you identifiy what exactly areas of interest you have already found yourself examining?

Not sure what im ging to be doing in my dissertation as of yet. In terms of choosing something myself over a tutor giving me a topic im not sure, my main interest is in networking, however i dont get to experiment a lot (my nan wont let me have any other computers in the house because of her electricity bill :( ).
