    Default Being incompetent at work

    Hello,

I joined this forum because I was told that I am incompetent at my work place for software development. I have not programmed in a long time and have not kept up with new technology. What can I do to not lose my job since I usually am finding that people I manage are better at work than I am and it is embarrasing.

How about... reading books about current techniques to get back up to speed? Perhaps follow a course? Do a home project to apply your new found knowledge in practice?

Pretty obvious stuff. You might also consider a change of career because apparently you lack interest in the subject matter, or else you WOULD have kept programming and kept up with new technology. You can't do this job if it isn't something you find fun to do.

First , it is not abnormal for people you manage to be better at their job than you are at their job. Managers often lose technical skills because they have to learn more management skills. My manager always asked me about certain technical issues. If I couldn't answer them I would refer one of my staff to him who was an expert on the subject. Neither he nor I were incompetent. What a good manager should do is point out where you can improve and offer suggestions and possible training.

Hmm okay, I see how you find it safe to assume the guy is a manager. I was leaving the possibility open that he was in fact only a team leader and not a department manager of sorts.

Well, actually, I hadn't thought of that. You may be right.
